AUDITION CALL
THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP by Charles Ludlam
WOOD RIVER REP— CASTING NOTICE (SELF-TAPE)
Wood River Rep, a nonprofit professional Equity theatre company, seeking two actors for The Mystery of Irma Vep at The Liberty Theater in Hailey, Idaho.
Submission Deadline: July 20, 2026
Rehearsal Dates: Aug. 31st-Sept. 22nd
Production Dates: Sept. 23rd-Oct. 4th 2026
Location: Hailey, Idaho
About the production: A gleeful gothic spoof and quick-change tour de force — two actors play all eight roles careening between genders, ages, and archetypes. The style is broad farce, penny-dreadful melodrama, Hammer-horror parody, and all run at breakneck precision.
-
Two virtuosic comic actors with exceptional timing, physical stamina, strong dialect facility (British RP), comfort playing across gender, and the discipline to execute rapid-fire quick changes.
ACTOR ONE plays:
Lady Enid Hillcrest — a high-strung new bride and mistress of Mandacrest. A gothic-romance heroine in full swoon.
Nicodemus Underwood — the gruff, peg-legged swineherd and handyman. Superstitious, and possibly werewolf-cursed.
An Intruder & Pev Amri — figures in the Egyptian sequence, including an awakened ancient princess.
ACTOR TWO plays:
Lord Edgar Hillcrest — master of Mandacrest, a brooding Egyptologist aristocrat mourning his late first wife and son.
Jane Twisden — the severe, secretive housekeeper, fiercely devoted to the dead first wife.
Alcazar — an Egyptian guide in the tomb sequence; the creature transformations (werewolf, vampire).
Casting note: Per the play's licensing requirements, both roles must be played by two actors of the same gender — i.e., two men or two women. All invited to audition.
*** We will consider actors of any age, gender and identification - so please audition if inspired!
-
Self-tape Audition — please submit through the google form the following:
Slate — name, home base, Equity status, contact info, and representation if any.
Comedic monologue (max 1 min) — heightened, theatrical comedy preferred. Show us bold choices and sharp timing.
Transformation piece (1 min max) — perform a short piece in which you play two sharply contrasting characters, switching voice, body, and ideally gender between them, to demonstrate the rapid character shifts. May be self-selected, devised, or two brief contrasting monologues.
Dialect sample (30 sec max) — a few lines in British Received Pronunciation. Note any additional dialects in your slate optional.
Optional (30 sec) — any relevant special skills: physical comedy, clown, commedia, movement.

SUBMISSIONS
We're always eager to meet artists whose work might find a home here — directors, playwrights, designers, composers, performers, and the many collaborators who bring a season to life. Seasons are built slowly and thoughtfully, and the artists we bring in are the ones who make each show what it becomes.
If you'd like to be considered for future work, please send us your materials. A resume, a portfolio link, a reel, a script, a website, whatever makes sense to what you are submitting for and shares with us what you do. We keep an active file and revisit it as we plan each season. We love collaborating and growing our team of artists and co-creators, so please reach out anytime!
